Pathway

A dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist — the active ingredient in the approved medicines Mounjaro (diabetes) and Zepbound (weight management), and one of the most-studied metabolic drugs of the last decade.

Mechanism

It activates the receptors for two incretin hormones simultaneously. GLP-1 activity reduces appetite, slows gastric emptying and improves insulin secretion; the added GIP activity appears to improve how fat tissue handles energy and may soften the nausea associated with GLP-1 alone.

Studied for

  • Type 2 diabetes — blood-glucose and HbA1c reduction
  • Chronic weight management in obesity or overweight with a related condition
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea (an approved use in some regions)
  • Cardiovascular and metabolic risk markers

Where the evidence stands

The SURPASS trials in diabetes and the SURMOUNT trials in obesity are large, well-run Phase 3 programmes. SURMOUNT-1 reported roughly 20–22% average weight reduction at the higher doses over 72 weeks — a strong, replicated evidence base.

Typical protocol

Titrated from 2.5 mg weekly upward over 20+ weeks, exactly as prescribed and monitored by your supervising clinician.

Contraindications & cautions

Personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma. MEN-2 syndrome. Pancreatitis and gallbladder disease are the serious concerns. Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Prescribed only after evaluation by your supervising provider, based on your history and bloodwork.

Important safety information
Tirzepatide is dispensed as a compounded preparation under valid prescription only. Compounded medications are not FDA-evaluated for safety or efficacy. Report adverse events to your supervising clinician immediately. Keep refrigerated; keep out of reach of children.
